http://ndhistory.dp.ua/index.php/NDP/article/view/325
This scientific paper is attempts to describing the main characteristics of the image of Ukrainian Cossacks in the scientific heritage of Lvov polish historian late XIX – early XX century L. Kubala. Generally, was presented historiographical tradition of Cossack problem study of in his works. It was found that the image of the ordinary Cossack was largely taken from the XVII‒XVIII centuries sources with its main features – anarchism and wildness. Cossack in L. Kubala’s works was opposed to the civilization. It is hardly possible to say that the historian was not acquainted with the specifics of the structure and organization of the Cossacks and the Cossack's state. In the case of Cossack leaders, mostly represented by individual figures, we are dealing with more positive and far from stereotypical representations of the Cossacks. Characters in L. Kubala's essays usually have a feelings, actions, aspirations and emotions, which, of course, should not have been in the historical study of the late XIX and early XX centuries. However, relying on the historian's aspiration to present the history of the Polish‒Lithuanian Commonwealth to a wide range of readers, can assume that it was above all important to create an impressive image that will be pursued in the memory of the reader.Oksana Vasylivna Pestrykova

http://ndhistory.dp.ua/index.php/NDP/article/view/326

The image of T. G. Shevchenko, created in the literary critical and journalistic works of participants and supporters of the Ukrainian national movement of the second half of the 50’s ‒ early 60’s of the XIX century, is considered. It is shown that the originality, the poetry of the people, the realism of depicting reality were characteristic signs of the creative genius of the Ukrainian poet. It is emphasized that literary critics and publicists have shown Kobzar's outstanding place not only in Ukrainian, but also in world literature. This asserted the cultural equality and self sufficiency of Ukraine as opposed to provinciality and inferiority, which were cultivated by the tsarist regime against the Ukrainian people. Mention of a talented Ukrainian poet in the legal Russian press destroyed the curtain of silence over the artist's figure of the word and the national prophet, who spent many years at the royal exile. The creation of the positive image of T. G. Shevchenko was of great importance for the consolidation of the democratic wire of Ukraine, especially in the conditions of the social upsurge of the late 50's ‒ early 60's of the XIX century.
Serhii Ivanovych Svitlenko

One of the problems of modern state organization is the formation of the system of local self-government institutions that are capable to decide tasks of local life. The today's existing investigation on the above mentioned theme gives us the idea about the activity of zemstvo in common, in Russian Empire or Ukraine. They often left the less studied question of the activity of the local self‒government institutions in some province as in Katerynoslavska itself. The analysis of the activities of semstva is carried with the help of common specific historical investigating methods. Such approach gives an opportunity to show a complex activity of zemstvo as to the social providing of population and the economic activity of local self‒government institutions during the Revolution. In the years of revolution of a zemstvo endured a number of difficulties, namely the acute financial crisis caused by financial problems of the Russian Empire. http://ndhistory.dp.ua/index.php/NDP/article/view/330

The issue of relations between the Ekaterinoslav botanist and geographer and the florist I. Ya. Akinfiev with the representatives of the Kiev botanical school was studied. The lack of knowledge of this topic is shown. The main representatives of this school were identified: I. F. Shmalhausen, professor of botany at Kiev University, and his apprentice in science V. I. Lipsky. The latter subsequently in 1922–1927, was president of the All-Ukrainian Academy of Sciences. Factors that contributed to the establishment of contacts and professional relations by I. Ya. Akinfiev and I. Shmalhausen, were considered. The main component of these contacts was the activity of I. Ya. Akinfiev as a collector of the botanical collections of vegetation of the European flora and the need for assistance from I. F. Shmalhausen in the development of collections of Caucasian vegetation carried out by I. Ya. Akinfiev. Is given Inscripts dedicated by I. Ya. Akinfiev to I. F. Shmalhausen, as well as is disclosed the history of the save monography of I. Ya. Akinfiev's "Flora of the Central Caucasus", donated to I. F. Shmalhausen. Previously unknown data on the relationship of another representative of the Kiev Botanical School V. I. Lipsky and I. Ya. Akinfiev are presented. Factors that contributed to the rapprochement and friendship of these botanists are considered. The professional interests, the closeness of views on the development of botanical science and the role in this development of plant taxonomy, social origin (both were from clerical family) were identified as the main factors. Intellectual development, knowledge of many languages, ethnography and professional attitude to her, aspiration to create botanical gardens, as centers of conservation of rare and disappearing vegetation, promoted their rapprochement and friendship. Information is provided on joint expeditions of I. Ya. Akinfiev and V. I. Lipsky to the Caucasus with the aim of herbaricization of the Caucasian flora. An attempt was made to determine the beginning of these expeditions. It is shown that V. I. Lipsky highly valued the botanical works of I. Ya. Akinfiev and put them on a par with the works of K. F. Ledebour, F. I. Ruprecht and other famous researchers of the flora of the Caucasus. A number inscripts of V. I. Lipsky's in books, which he presented to I. Ya. Akinfiev, are cited. They testify to the deeply respectful and friendly relations between the future president of the All‒Ukrainian Academy of Sciences V. I. Lipsky and the Ekaterinoslav florist and geographer‒botanist I. Ya. Akinfiev. The author substantiates the assertion that I. Ya. Akinfiev also belonged to the Kiev school of botanists I. F. http://ndhistory.dp.ua/index.php/NDP/article/view/331

The activities of the scientific and technical societies in the industrial regions of the Russian Empire for uniting the engineering community, for employing and supporting its members were according to the very purpose of the designated societies creation. The basis of the activity of engineering scientific and technical societies was, first of all, the idea of integrating the engineering community not only in order to establish professional communication, but also mutual assistance. "Asistance" in matters of employment, material assistance to the society members and their families. Professional support was expressed, first of all, in the promotion of employment, which the societies paid a lot of attention: in the instructions (IRTS department) and in the charters of practically all societies (with the exception of CSEKR) the legal basis for employment was laid down. Special units of the Bureau for the work search were created (KD IRTS). The Labor Bureau (KD IRTS), the Reference and Intermediary Department (CSEKR); the publishing houses of the societies posted vacancies in the regional enterprises in different business fields and private announcements of engineers about job search, etc. Engineering societies, acting as an intermediary in recruiting, not only provided assistance to their members, but also provided employers with well-trained specialists in various fields of industrial and agricultural production, thus contributing to the development of the industrial southern regions of the state. The financial support of its members and their families, which was laid down in the charter, as one of the priority tasks (with the exception of the IRTT departments), was common to all scientific and technical societies. Material support was provided in different ways: temporary or one-time assistance (irrevocable or on loan) and monthly (loan or non-refundable). Material support was more common to the engineers societies ‒ graduates of higher technical institutions and independent regional societies and was given on the application of a member of the company. Professional support was also for students of higher technical institutions. Scientific and technical societies became the centers of the professional community, helping students with their Alma Mater by any means available: allocating funds to their own scholarships (SE КHMC), involving students in research (SE КHMC, SRTS, CSEKR), material assistance needy students (SRTS). All this contributed to the unification of the engineering community and increased authority of engineers and engineering work in general.
Nadiia Mykolaivna Kushlakova

http://ndhistory.dp.ua/index.php/NDP/article/view/332

The article deals with book exchange of Katerinoslav libraries with different institutions of the imperial country in the 19th – the beginning of the 20th centuries. Book exchange is considered as an important component of book acquisition in libraries of different departmental subordination. Book exchange provides interesting cooperation and close connections among libraries, institutions and organizations through publishing products. Book exchange helps to organize qualitatively united book collection in Katerinoslav Province with the aim of immediate satisfaction of different users' requests. The most active book exchange took place between Katerinoslav scientific and professional societies and their colleagues from Ukrainian and Russian libraries and different institutions. In particular, "Prosvita" library communicated with institutions by book exchanging supplementing the book collection with modern Ukrainian literature. http://ndhistory.dp.ua/index.php/NDP/article/view/334

Actuality of theme is determined by the need to harmonize social relations in conditions of social instability. With the development of a democratic society, one must take into account the needs of the believers of different confessions and build a policy that is tolerant to them. Therefore, the purpose of the study has become the specificity of the activities of the Roman Catholic and Lutheran confessions in the South of Ukraine in the second half of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in the light of the church policy of the Russian Empire. It is noted that imperial power is in the management of a multi-confessional state tried to combine the traditional orientation towards the Russian people and Orthodoxy with universalism. This was manifested in the attempt to apply the unified principles of the management and support of foreign confessions. Built in the state mechanism of legal regulation, they had the status of "tolerant". Their legal status was legally enshrined in 1857 in the Regulations, thanks to which the state has a real opportunity to influence the internal life of Catholics and Lutherans. Convincing examples are given that, under the influence of external factors, there were differences in the attitude of the Russian authorities to Catholics and Lutherans. The Roman Catholic Confession was under greater pressure than the Lutheran, because Catholics were forbidden to communicate directly with the papal throne. Communication with the Vatican took place only through the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The church life of both Catholics and Lutherans was strictly regulated. The only way of life of foreign confessions in the Russian Empire was the complete subordination to secular power and neutrality in relation to other religions.
Nataliia Mykolaivna Bulanova

http://ndhistory.dp.ua/index.php/NDP/article/view/335

It is very important for our modern Ukrainian society to study experience of joint-stock entrepreneurship in order to renew and develop the main branches of heavy industry. The aim of the article is to analyze the stages of joint-stock entrepreneurship and its impact upon the development of heavy industry branches in the Dnieper region in the second half of the 19th century. The first joint-stock companies in the Russian empire appeared at the edge of the 18th and 19th centuries. At first the process of joint-stock entrepreneurship was slow. During the period of the 70-s and 80-s of the 19th century new joint-stock companies were founded in the mining industry of the Dnieper region. Some of them had foreign capital. At the end of the 80-s and the beginning of the 90-s there was the process of industry concentration and capital centralization in the Dnieper region. Many new joint-stock companies were founded in mining, metallurgical and machine-building branches of industry. New joint-stock banks also appeared at that time. Joint-stock companies and joint-stock capital combined. Joint-stock enterprises provided the development of equipment and technology of production. 96,5 % of cast iron melting, 77,5 % of coal mining and 73,5 % of iron ore mining were produced by joint-stock companies of the Dnieper region at the end of the 19th century. Influence of joint-stock entrepreneurship upon the development of heavy industry branches was intensive.
Andrii Gennadiiovych Peretokin

http://ndhistory.dp.ua/index.php/NDP/article/view/336
This article suggests analysis of discussion regarding the theory of Frontier and its using by Ukrainian historians. This discussion should revive after the publication of the monograph by I. Chornovil "The Combined Frontiers. World and domestic dimensions". Discussion between I. Chornovil and his main reviewer V. Grybovsky also has been evaluated here. The author analyzed using such terms as "Frontier" and "Great border" by contemporary Ukrainian historians of the Cossacks who do not care sufficiently about terminology using the most widespread one. Due to the authority of Y. Dashkevich the term "Great border" was distributed in the 1990s and early 2000s. In the last decade, due to the popularity of this theory and the general progress of Ukrainian historical science, the term "Frontier" has been using to define the southern Ukrainian territory connected with the history of Ukrainian Cossacks and Crimean Tatars. It has been underlined sustainability of myths related to the Tatar and Turkish factors of Ukrainian history, which continue to exist on the pages of present-day researches. It has been also given some specific historical examples that allow to refute allegations concerning the religious situation in the southern Ukrainian region at the end of the 18th – early 19th c., and hence the Orthodox identity of the frontier population. Possible change of religion due to the desire to adapt to a new political situation, a kind of perception of one’s / other’s, ability to adapt to somewhat different environment (in this case, Muslim) – characteristic patterns of behavior of the frontier population of the southern Ukrainian region of the 18 th – beginning of the 19 th c.Svitlana Mykolaivna Kaiuk

http://ndhistory.dp.ua/index.php/NDP/article/view/338

Conditions and factors of formation of ideology and political program of the Makhnovshchyna are investigated. The peasant-agrarian basis of this version of the Ukrainian insurgent movement of the period of the revolution of 1917−1921, which was at the same time under the ideological influence of anarcho-communism, was justified. A short excursion into the historiography of the question makes it possible to ascertain the actual level of its study by historical science. On concrete examples of the revolutionary activity of Nestor Makhno, it is explained why the Makhnovist movement had no chance to develop into the so called third revolution and remained an objective component of the agrarian-peasant revolution. The common and distinctive in the theory of anarchism and the socio-economic and political demands of the peasantry of Southern Ukraine are correlated. The attitude of the anarchists and the peasantry to the problems of property, capital, self-government of the population, the construction of the state, and the like are compared separately. The antihistorical tradition of vulgarization and primitivization of the Makhnovist movement in general and the political views of N. Makhno in particular is called into question.
Dmytro Volodymyrovych Arkhireyskyi

http://ndhistory.dp.ua/index.php/NDP/article/view/339

The analysis of the book by F. Turchenko, who has analyzed the complex process of the textbook creation in Ukraine in the beginning of independence, is suggested in the article. The author characterizes general political situation, in the context of which reorganization of school education in history was happening, new educational editions were being discussed, new programs and concepts of education in history were being developed. Great attention is paid to the attempts of pro-Russian and pro-communistic political forces of Ukraine to influence the concept and contents of the textbooks. The analysis of studying themes of the past of Ukraine in Russian textbooks, as well as suggestions of Russian historians to reconsider the concept of education in history of Ukraine is given. They suggestto change the contents of the program and textbooks. The influence of the textbooks creation on the events of 2014-2017: Russian military aggression in Crimea and Donbas, extension of separatism, splash of patriotic tendencies in Ukraine, due to which pro-Russian terroristic organizations could be stopped, is defined.
